Beyond the Curriculum

This message is for students in all areas whether you are in university, school, or a training college. No matter where you are on your academic journey, know that God is with you. Academics are more than just studying for a degree or certificate they are a part of life where God’s glory can be revealed. God’s glory is the manifestation of His excellence and greatness. This means that even in your studies, God’s glory can be seen. When you succeed, when you grow in wisdom, and even when you face challenges, His presence is there. He wants to use your academic journey as a testimony of His power and faithfulness.

In the future, we will also discuss how to deal with uncertainty, delay, disappointment, and failure in this field because, let’s be honest, academics are not always a smooth journey. But for now, let’s focus on how we can excel in this area while glorifying God.

For many, studying feels like an obligation a means to an end. And honestly, I get it. Sometimes school feels unnecessary it seems like a system designed to hand out certificates that prove we’ve learned something, even though we forget most of it soon after! I know I’m not the only one who has studied hard for an exam only to have all the information disappear from my brain as soon as I walk out of the exam hall hahaha. But that’s the thing: while the knowledge itself may fade, the discipline, perseverance, and skills we develop in the process remain. Even more, these certificates serve as door openers. Yes, God can break protocols and open doors where none exist, but imagine how powerful it would be if we, as believers, were known for our academic excellence, not for our own glory, but so that people could trace our success back to the wisdom of God. Imagine the testimony when people look at your achievements and say, “This can only be God!”

Before sin entered the world, Adam had work to do in the Garden. This shows that work was part of God’s original design for mankind, not as a punishment, but as a purposeful and fulfilling responsibility. This means that our studies are not just busywork or something we endure to get a degree, but they are an opportunity to glorify God by developing the gifts, intellect, and wisdom He has given us. Instead of viewing school as a burden, we should see it as a God-given assignment: a season where He is shaping us for greater things. You never know how God will use your academic journey to position you for influence and impact. The knowledge and discipline you acquire today might be the very thing that opens doors for you in the future, whether in business, education, science, government, or any other field. As believers, our studies can serve a higher purpose beyond just personal success. What if your education isn’t just about you, but about the people God wants to bless through you? What if your degree equips you to shape industries, lead organizations with wisdom, and influence others with godly character? Excellence in academics is not just about getting good grades it’s about stewarding the opportunities God has given you.

One of the struggles I faced as a student was balancing my responsibilities in uni with my desire to spend time with God and serve Him, whether personally or in church. I don’t want school to take priority over God, but at the same time, I know I need to be disciplined and focused. Through diligence, consistency, and discipline, you can ensure that you’re honoring God in your studies. These are the key principles that will be explored in my upcoming blog post, but for now, remember this: academic success is not something you achieve by your own strength, but by the Spirit who empowers you. This is something that needs to be nurtured daily. The more you try to navigate this area of your life on your own, the harder it becomes. Instead of seeing school as a system forcing you to earn a degree, begin to view it as a divine opportunity where God is molding you. Your academic journey is not just about receiving a diploma it’s about shaping your mindset, building endurance, and preparing you for the path God has for you. God can use your academic success as a testimony. When people see a believer excelling, they will begin to wonder, “What’s their secret?” That’s when you can point them to the wisdom and grace of God. If we, as Christians, lead in academics, we’ll find ourselves in places of influence bringing God’s presence into industries, governments, and nations.

The key is inviting God into your academic journey. We often separate school from our spiritual life, but why not pray before studying? God cares about your education too!

Ask Him for wisdom, clarity, and focus. EL ROI (the God Who Sees Me) sees your efforts, and He wants to help you succeed. You don’t have to do it alone!

Pray before you study – Invite God into your studying process to understand everything you are learning.
Pray for your teachers – They are the ones grading you, so ask God to bless them with wisdom and to extend grace.
Pray for time management – Ask God to help you balance school, church, and personal time with Him.

I pray that God helps you to design a schedule where academics do not become an idol, yet there is still dedication and discipline.

Seek first the kingdom of God, and everything else, including academic success will be added to you (Matthew 6:33)

As you walk this academic journey, remember that EL ROI is watching over you. He sees your dedication, He acknowledges your struggles, and He is preparing a future for you beyond what you can imagine.

So, study with purpose. Don’t wait for motivation but always remember the bigger picture and the WHY of what you are doing. I believe God has a plan for the space where he has planted you and my prayer is that the spirit of Excellence that rested upon Daniel (Daniel 2:27-28) will rest and you and cause you to be favored and promoted in your Journey to Glory as a student. Trust in His guidance. For in your academics, as in all things, God’s glory is revealed.

Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans. -Proverbs 16:3
